Conflict of Interest Policy

Employees are responsible for assuring that they do not engage in activities that could be considered a conflict of interest, and are responsible to report any possible conflict of interest to the Human Resources Department. All employees are required to submit a Conflict of Interest Disclosure Form at the time of hire, and to review this Conflict of Interest Policy at least annually.  If any circumstance arises that may result in a conflict of interest situation for an employee, it is that employee's responsibility to submit to the Human Resources Department an updated Conflict of Interest Disclosure Form regarding that circumstance. Conflict of Interest Disclosure Forms may be obtained by contacting the Human Resources Department.    While it is not possible to list or define every situation that would constitute a conflict of interest, the following examples are illustrative:

  1. Engaging in business or employment with a person or business entity that supplies goods or services to Ensign College.
  2. Taking any action that would preclude the placing of competitive bids by vendors who serve the College to the benefit of a supplier with whom the employee is in any way related or from whom the employee receives any benefit.
  3. Being in a position to exert influence on or be a part of any transaction affecting Ensign College from which the employee, the employee’s family, or business associates might receive benefit or gain of any kind now or in the future. This restriction does not include income from investments in securities commonly traded in the markets and other benefits received by minority stockholders of corporations.
  4. Accepting gifts, services, or favors in excess of $25.00 value from anyone doing business with Ensign College, either for the employee or for anyone else.
  5. Engaging during scheduled working hours in personal or business activities that are not part of an employee’s regular assigned job duties.
  6. Using Ensign College employment status, intellectual property or resources to further outside personal business or employment activities.
  7. Forming business relationships or obligations which may compromise the employee’s objectivity in performing his or her assigned job duties or making recommendations or decisions in behalf of Ensign College.
  8. Using bulletin boards, displaying or selling merchandise, or distributing literature for personal business or employment activities anywhere on the campus of the College.
  9. Hiring current Ensign College students to further outside personal business activities.

All situations that could reasonably be considered a conflict of interest must be fully articulated in a Conflict of Interest Disclosure Form and submitted to the Human Resources Department for review.  The Director of Human Resources will then review all potential conflicts of interest with the President.  The President then makes the determination as to whether a conflict of interest exists or not.  In instances where it is determined that a conflict of interest exists, the employee will be asked to rectify any conflicts of interest, or the President will choose to accept the risks associated with the conflicts of interest.  Employees who fail to satisfactorily rectify or disclose conflicts of interest are subject to disciplinary action which may include termination.
